The following is a speech by Singapore's longest-serving detainee under the Internal Security Act (ACT), Mr Chia Thye Poh. He was arrested in 1966 and had served a total of 32 years under detention for "allegedly conducting pro-communist activities against the government, he was imprisoned for 23 years without charge or trial and subsequently placed under conditions of house arrest for another nine years." Mr Chia was conferred the Lim Lian Geok Spirit Award in Malaysia on 18 December.

The recent spate of breakdowns in Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) services has clearly demonstrated the vulnerabilities of relying on a monopoly for essential services, regardless of how efficient and reliable it has been in the past.
Statement by The Workers' Party.
The Workers’ Party is deeply concerned about the frequency of MRT train service disruptions along the North-South and East-West (NS-EW) lines and the Circle Line, which are managed by SMRT Corporation (SMRT). We are particularly dismayed by the scale of the service disruption between Marina Bay and Braddell MRT stations on the evening of Thursday, 15th December, and how the crisis was managed.
